Restaurant mode: one receipt, everyone claims their own lines

Dinner, drinks, brunch, the office takeaway. One person scans, the table joins from a QR code, and SumFair sums it up and splits it fair before the card machine arrives.

What makes a restaurant split fair

The parts that go wrong when a table splits by hand, and how SumFair handles each one.

Shared plates: Nachos for three: equal. The wine: 25/25/50, or by shares. Two of the four beers to one person: by quantity. Each item can use its own method.
Tip by consumption: Someone who had 20% of the food pays 20% of the tip by default. The host can switch to equal, custom percentages or exclude a person.
Service charge is not a tip: A mandatory 10% service line on the receipt is kept separate from the voluntary tip; each can follow a different rule.
Deposits stay with the drink: A bottle deposit such as the Romanian SGR or the German Pfand belongs to whoever had the bottle, not to the whole table.
Discounts and vouchers: A global discount is spread proportionally; a discount on one item reduces that item. Vouchers and gift cards count as payments, not as items.
Unclaimed items: Before finalizing, the host sees what nobody claimed and decides: assign it, share it between everyone, absorb it, or leave it out on purpose.
Exact to the cent: 10 lei three ways is 3.34 + 3.33 + 3.33. The per-person totals always add up to the amount actually paid.
Late arrivals and leavers: Anyone can join with the same link until the host finalizes. Someone leaving early sees their total and can pay before the rest is settled.
Corrections after claims: If the host fixes a price after people have claimed, every affected total updates and the change is logged for everyone to see.

A worked example

Three people at Trattoria Da Marco. The receipt reads: pizza 48, two Coca-Cola 24 plus 1.00 SGR, nachos 36, wine 120, espresso 9, service 10% 23.70, total 261.70. Alex has the pizza; Maria and James a Coca-Cola each; the nachos are shared by all three; James has half the wine and Alex and Maria a quarter each. Nobody claims the espresso, so the host splits it three ways. The host paid 290, so the tip is 28.30.

Every column reconciles: the food column equals the receipt lines, the service column equals the printed service line, and the tip column equals what the host paid above the receipt. That check runs on every bill, automatically.

Restaurant questions

Can the host and the guests use different phones and systems?

Yes. The host uses the SumFair web app; guests open a link in whatever browser their phone has. iPhone, Android, an old phone: it only needs a browser.

What if the restaurant Wi-Fi is bad?

Claims are queued on the phone and sent when the connection returns. The receipt image is uploaded once, in the background.

Can I split a bill without scanning the receipt?

Yes. Type the lines by hand, or enter just the total and split it equally. Scanning saves time; it is not required.
