Receipt scanning that understands the receipt
Reading the text is the easy part. SumFair rebuilds the receipt as structured lines, attaches every charge to the right item, and checks that it all adds up to the printed total.
Photograph it, in one or more shots
One photo for a normal receipt. For a long one, take the top, the middle and the bottom with some overlap. Pictures from the gallery work too.
SumFair detects the paper, corrects the perspective, orders the shots, finds the overlapping lines and removes the duplicates.
Read it as a structure, not as text
Each line becomes an item with a name, a quantity, a unit price and a line total. Subtotal, discounts, VAT, service charge, deposits and the total are recognised for what they are.
2 x Coca-Cola 12.00 SGR 0.50 Pizza Prosciutto 48.00 DISCOUNT -10.00 TOTAL 62.50 becomes: Coca-Cola × 2 = 24.00, deposit 1.00 attached Pizza Prosciutto 48.00 discount -10.00 → total 63.00, printed 62.50: flaggedApply the local rules
A separate rules layer per country decides what each charge means and how it is shared.
- Romania: SGR bottle deposits attached to the drink, VAT recognised
- Italy: coperto per head, servizio on the total
- Germany: Pfand attached to the item
- France: service compris recognised as included
- United States: sales tax and suggested tip spread by consumption
Check that it adds up
Items plus taxes, service, deposits and tip, minus discounts, must equal the printed total. If there is a difference, SumFair shows the amount and highlights the lines with the lowest confidence.
Detected total: 327.50 Calculated total: 325.50 Difference: 2.00 Something doesn't add up: Espresso ×2 read as 4.40Fix in a tap
Rename, change quantity or price, delete or add a line, merge duplicates, separate combos, edit the discount, deposit, tip or total. Tap, edit, save. The check reruns on every change.
Edge cases it is built for
- Combos and identical lines
- A menu combo can be split back into its parts; four identical “Beer 20.00” lines become one line with quantity 4.
- Price without a name, name without a price
- Orphan lines are paired where the layout allows and flagged where it doesn't.
- Service included or tip written by hand
- “Service 10%” printed by the restaurant and “tip 30” written on the slip are different lines with different rules.
- Vouchers, gift cards, cashback
- Treated as payments against the total, so nobody's share is computed from money that was never spent.
- Deposits summed at the bottom
- Some receipts list SGR as one total line. SumFair spreads it back over the eligible drinks.
- Confidence you can see
- Every line carries a confidence score. High-confidence lines stay quiet; low ones are highlighted for a look.
