How SumFair works

Scan. Share. Claim. Settle. Here is the whole flow for a restaurant bill, and what changes for a trip. Prefer pictures? See every screen of the app.

  1. Create a bill

    Tap Split a bill. Choose the currency, optionally name the place. No account needed.

    You can start as a guest. An optional free account keeps the bill in your history and lets you reuse the same group next time.

  2. Scan the receipt

    Photograph the receipt. For long receipts, take two or three overlapping photos: top, middle, bottom.

    SumFair straightens the image, reads it, detects where the photos overlap, removes duplicated lines and rebuilds the receipt: items, quantities, unit prices, discounts, VAT, service charge, deposits and the printed total.

  3. Check that it adds up

    Fix anything the scan got wrong. Tap a line to rename it, change the quantity or price, merge duplicates, add a missing item.

    SumFair continuously compares items + taxes + fees + deposits + tip − discounts with the total on the receipt. If there is a difference, it shows the amount and highlights the lines it is least sure about, so you never finalize a bill that silently loses 2 lei.

  4. Share the QR code or link

    Show the QR code at the table or send the link. Guests open it in any browser, type a name and join.

    The link is a random, unguessable token. It contains no names, phone numbers or emails. Nobody has to install an app, create an account or confirm anything.

  5. Everyone claims their items

    Each person taps what they had. Shared items can be split equally, by exact amounts, by percentages, by shares or by quantity.

    The receipt is live: claims appear for everyone in real time. Two of the four beers to Alex, one each to Maria and James, without anyone doing percentages by hand.

  6. Add the tip, and finalize

    Enter what was actually paid, or the tip directly. Choose how it's spread: proportional to consumption (default), equal, custom, or excluded for someone.

    Before you finalize, SumFair lists anything still unclaimed and asks what to do: assign it, split it between everyone, let the payer absorb it, or ignore it on purpose. Tip, mandatory service charge and taxes stay separate lines with their own rules.

  7. Settle

    Everyone sees exactly what they owe, with a breakdown: food, deposits, service, tip, total. One tap to copy an IBAN or phone number, open a payment request, or mark as paid.

    For trips, SumFair first simplifies the debts, so a circle of who-owes-whom becomes the fewest transfers that settle every balance exactly. You can settle everything, only until today, selected expenses, or just the person who is leaving early.

What changes in trip mode

A trip is a group with many expenses over time. Each expense can be a scanned receipt, a manual entry (taxi, fuel, tickets), a transfer between two people, a refund, or income the group received, like a deposit returned. One expense can have several payers, and each expense keeps its own currency with the exchange rate locked at the moment it was added.

Balances update as expenses come in. When it's time to settle, SumFair reduces the payments to the minimum set that clears everyone exactly. Settled expenses are locked in a checkpoint; if someone finds a mistake later, the checkpoint can be reopened with an audit trail and recalculated openly, never edited quietly.

What SumFair guarantees

  • Every amount is stored in whole minor units (cents, bani, pence). No floating-point arithmetic, ever.
  • The sum of all participants' shares equals the total actually paid, to the last cent.
  • Rounding is deterministic and auditable: the same input always gives the same split.
  • Exchange rates never change retroactively.
  • Nothing is finalized while items are still unclaimed without an explicit decision.
